For the youngest child, the world is still encountered primarily through the body.
Sand beneath their feet.
Warm ocean water.
A horse passing close enough to touch.
Fruit growing on a tree.
Hands in the soil.
The smell of something cooking over fire.
At this age, Sumba doesn't need to be explained.
It can simply be felt.
Days can move gently between beach, garden, farm, water, rest and family time — allowing children to become familiar with a place rather than rushing from one experience to another.

Imagine the World
As children grow, their relationship with the world begins to change.
They still meet it through movement and imagination, but curiosity is awakening.

Between nine and twelve, children are increasingly ready to step beyond observation and become participants.
They want to know how things work.
They are capable of doing more for themselves.
And the wider human world becomes deeply interesting.
In Sumba, this might mean harvesting from the farm, learning how something is made, cooking, fishing, riding, exploring or working alongside someone whose life looks very different from their own.
They don't only want to see.
They want to have a go.

The experience is no longer simply something happening around the child.
They begin to find their own place within it.
